On the morning of October 7 2023 Zeev Engelmayer was a satirist. His career was built on pushing boundaries, provoking reactions and finding the absurdity in everything. That version of his artistic identity ended before the day was over.
In the weeks that followed he could not make jokes. He could not find absurdity. What he could do was pick up a brush and paint what he was feeling in raw, unfiltered color. Not finished works. Postcards. Small enough to hold. Honest enough to hurt.
He did not plan for them to travel. They did anyway. Across social media. Across continents. Until one of them landed on the desk of the Pope at the Vatican.
Zeev Engelmayer talks about what happens to an artist when the thing they relied on disappears and what unexpectedly grows in its place.
